About Bubbe

lower-east-side

Bubbe was born on the Lower East Side of Manhattan in 1907 to Hungarian immigrant parents. She was the 5th of what would eventually be 7 children who lived in a small apartment in what is now the Alphabet City neighborhood of New York. Her family stressed education and she went to school through high school at Washington Irving High School, later attended by such famous Jewish mothers as Joy Behar and Whoopi Goldberg.

Like many young women in the late 1920’s, she worked in a department store during the morning and early afternoon and then came home to help her mother with the cooking and taking care of her 2 younger sisters.

Eventually, she married my poppy and they moved to Brooklyn, eventually buying a home, where I later grew up.
